Nick Spencer‘s run on the newly relaunched Captain America title has been a lightning rod of late, but now the writer is shooting some sparks of his own.
The Marvel Comics writer drew criticism from cable news network Fox News over his use of a storyline which features Sam Wilson facing off against white supremacist organization The Sons of the Serpent. The first issue showed Sam beating back the Sons’ attempt to kidnap and murder immigrants illegally crossing the US/Mexico border, something which Fox took personally. In an interview with The Daily Beast, Spencer responded to the criticism, saying “We were very clear in the book—these were not peaceful protesters of border policy,” Spencer says. “So when you see people saying ‘He’s talking about me!’ well, unless you’re going down and kidnapping or murdering border crossers, no, we weren’t.”
What was most interesting was that Spencer pushed back against the assertion that this is a Captain America comic for left-wingers only, stating that “There will be villains in this book that have left-wing ideologies. There will be conservatives portrayed in a positive light in the book. I want to write a book that examines modern-day America through a superhero comic book lens—Cap comics have a long tradition of that. That’s all.”
Whether Captain America can toe the fine line between political commentary and political satire will be a fascinating thing to watch develop, that’s for certain.
